National Media Icon to Speak at 40th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala
The Austin Area Urban League has confirmed Roland S. Martin, Host and Managing Editor of News One Now, former CNN contributor, and senior analyst for the Tom Joyner Morning Show as the keynote speaker for the 40th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala on Saturday, September 30, 2017. This black tie event will begin at 7:00 PM at the JW Marriott Austin located at 110 E 2nd St, Austin, Texas 78701.
Martin’s mission is simple, creating and curating high-quality media content that opens the door for conversations surrounding the most controversial issues that minority populations face. It is his belief that in order to fix these issues we must openly discuss the causes and overall impact on all levels. He exemplifies this practice throughout his work on a multitude of media channels, Martin is a fearless journalist that has influenced the style of modern media.
Martin is the host and managing editor of TV One’s NewsOne Now, the first daily morning news program in history to focus on news and analysis of politics, entertainment, sports and culture from an explicitly African American perspective. In his career, Martin has been showered with more than 30 awards for journalistic excellence, including being named the Journalist of the Year in 2013 by the National Association of Black Journalists for his extensive focus on voter suppression and other issues of concern to African Americans during the 2012 election. A two-time NAACP Image Award winner, Martin has been named by Ebony Magazine on three occasions as one of the 150 Most Influential African Americans in the United States.
Since 1977, the Austin Area Urban League has been providing tools to African Americans and underserved populations to build a foundation for social and economic equality. Our mission is implemented through programs and services in the areas of educational improvement, workforce and career development, and the preservation of safe and affordable housing.
