2nd Annual Hospitality Careers Week
The Austin Area Urban League (AAUL) Workforce & Career Development team would like to thank everyone involved in the 2nd Annual Hospitality Careers Week 2017! The workshop connected local hospitality professionals to a dynamic group of AAUL clients looking to enter Austin’s multi–million dollar hospitality industry.
When former AAUL Board Member Robert Watson, General Manager of the Hilton Austin, introduced the idea of an AAUL hospitality careers workshop last year, the Workforce & Career Development team loved the idea and immediately got to work. The team was well aware of “Austin’s hotel boom” and finally had the opportunity to work directly with an experienced professional who fully understood the AAUL mission, the hospitality industry, and Austin’s unique job market. With the help of Robert Watson, the Workforce & Career Development team presented the first Hospitality Careers Workshop July 20, 2016. Darnise Jones, the Workforce & Career Development Manager described the event saying, “The first workshop was well received by our clients and allowed our team to build relationships with industry employers”.
The goal of the Hospitality Careers Week was to educate clients on the wide range of careers available in the hospitality industry. Before introducing this event the Workforce & Career Development team found it challenging to encourage clients to pursue careers outside of general labor and housekeeping. “When it came to the concept of tourism and hospitality the first jobs our clients thought of were the usual housekeeping team jobs. Our clients didn’t fully understand the growth potential of positions within the industry” said Jones.
The two day workshop covered interview preparation, hiring practices, average industry income, projected job growth, local job opportunities, and various career paths. By bringing industry professionals to the Urban League clients were able to get a full scope of information that will not only help them land a job, but support their advancement in whatever career path they choose. On the final day of the workshop the Workforce & Career Development team presented 14 clients with Hospitality Certificates.
Partnering organizations included: White Lodging and the Driskill Hotel. Presentations by Pooja Lonkar, Driskill Hotel HR Manger, Dalia Galindo, Westin Domain HR Manager, and Bryan Heintz, Hyatt House General Manager made the event a hit!
The Austin Area Urban League Workforce & Career Development team already has plans in place for the 3rd Annual Hospitality Careers Week 2018 and hopes to make the event bigger and better.
